Frequently Asked Questions
Can you tell me more about the Motivate program?
The participants of this beta of Motivate will experience 4 stages of development over an intense two-month period;
1 - Self-Assessment:Using three powerful tools, you will become more certain than ever of your innate talents, unique advantages and how exactly you contribute today to the world around you.
2 - Purpose Discovery: Become clear about what makes your life meaningful, your action-based values, your anchors for success and what you should really be rallying around right now.
3 - Start Something Special: While being guided step-by-step, take what you have learned about yourself and start something significant that is a genuine expression of you. Earlier you figured how you contribute today, now you will decide how you should contribute in the future.
4 - Live Mighty: If you choose to, you can live your calling every day, in every part of your life. You'll be shown how.
Who are you and why are qualified to mentor me?
My name is Sterling Lynk. You can learn a little more about me and why I started this project here (I would start with the two "A Purpose" posts). The short of it is that there are many things I could be used for that I would consider mighty, but none would be mightier to me than helping one person (and then two, then many, and then everyone) find their own purpose in this world, live that calling everyday and discover and share their own story. I believe this is my calling.
The experience I am offering is the path I took to figure out my calling and start doing a better job of living it, without most of the unhelpful and destructive dead-ends, distractions and false-starts. You will be answering the same questions I answered and using the same tools I did, all while discovering a way to live your personal genius.
For the past 12 years (essentially my entire career to date) I have been blessed to be asked to manage organizations and lead others in both workplace and volunteer settings. "Leading" has always meant that I have the responsibility to coach, mentor and develope those who follow me. That development has always begun with gaining clarity about callings, and how those calling fit with the work of the organization in question. For example, while serving the Urban League of Greater Madison, I was responsible for guiding dozens of employees who were in turn responsible for guiding hundreds of clients and students.
Through Motivate you will benefit from my journey to discover my "mighty purpose" and my passion, experience and skill in helping others to grow into who they truly are. Finding and living your purpose may be very personal, but that does not mean you have to do it alone.
How much money does Motivate cost?
This is a beta test of this experience and will not cost you money if you are selected. I will provide everything you need. I will probably make recommendations and suggestions for different tools and resources, but these will not be necessary to have a full experience.
What is the time commitment to participate in Motivate? What will be your expectations of me?
This will be an intense experience. I am guessing about 5 or 6 hours a week above and beyond everything else you have going on in your life. I think it's worth it.
Expect a weekly group call and a weekly one-on-one mentorship call, both likely during typical business hours (there may be some flexibility here).
You will have a good amount of work to do on your own, but you can expect to receive frequent support from me as well as the other participants. You are also expected to support the other participants, since this will help your learning and growth.
Finally, since this is a beta, I need your help to improve this experience. This is a partnership. Your help will make Motivate that much more powerful for those who come after.
How do I apply for Motivate?
I expect to open the application process during the week of December 3rd and probably close it the week after. This short timeline is driven by an opportunity (see below) and my ability to get everything ready.
The most time consuming part of pulling together an application may be securing one or two letters of recommendation and commitments of support from past or current mentors. I suggest you reach out now, share with them this site and ask them to be there to help when the time comes.
Why an application process? Why not just open Motivate to anyone who is interested?
If this beta is successful, then I may be able to open this up to more folks in the future. At the moment I only have the capacity to work with a very small group (maybe 2 or 3) and I want to make sure I do a great job. Completing the application will help me do a better job and demonstrate your willingness to follow through on the time commitment for this experience.
How will you will select who you'll invite to participate?
I am recruiting a committee to review applications and recommendations, and possibly conduct some interviews. We will select up to 3 applicants based on current best fit with this beta.
I want the $10,000. How do I get that?
I probably don't need to say this, but if your primary reason for getting involved is the money, then you shouldn't apply.
Check out http://www.scion.com/motivate/. This is essentially a purpose-focused business/career plan competition with the grand prize being $10,000, a car and access to some awesome people. Nice fit with what we are doing here. They are interested in artistic, musical and retail ideas. I don't have any say in who will win that and you should feel free to pursue that on your own...but feel free to share your experience with this community. But, participation in Motivate will make sure you have everything you need to send them a quality submission.
What is your relationship with Scion and Toyota, or Scion Motivate?
I don't have a relationship with these folks (beyond being a typical car customer), but they did inspire me to act now, and I liked the name of their competition so I borrowed it for my program.
Just in case anyone from Toyota and/or Scion stumbles upon this page please note that all of the Scion stuff belongs to Scion/Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc., and Scion is a registered trademark of Toyota Motor Corporation.
I am not artistic or musically inclined, will that impact my application status?
No. The Scion competition is just an option there for those of you who choose to pursue a project that relates to Scion's interests.
How can I learn more?
I hosted a 30 minute call to share a few details about Motivate on December 5th. You can hear that call by clicking the audio player below or you can dial 1(641)715-3413, enter access code 487395#, and when prompted hit the # key to listen to the most recent recording. By the way, if I was a member of Toast Masters International, I would have had to pay a small fortune in penalties with the number of "umms" I let escape my lips.
